Cannot run StarOffice 6.0 beta binary

Maybe Im crazy, but does Star Office REQUIRE you have Java?  I installed 
SO 5.2 on GNU/Linux and OpenOffice 6.0 on Windows and neither one 
REQUIRED Java.  They looked for it, but didnt REQUIRE it.
