KDE and speed

2-3 seconds does not seem long to me.  But maybe I am misunderstanding
you.  I would also ask what type of disks you are using and how much
swap space you have configured.  The first time that you start up Kmail
or Konqueror, etc. it has to be found then loaded from disk.  Try
starting it up, killing it and then restarting it... see if that works
faster.  If it does then the bottleneck is either the disk and it's
speed ot possibly the file lookup.  That is my guess, only a guess ;-)
