Compiling the linux kernel on redhat 7.0

I know that redhat screwed up with the 7.0 compiler.  I have it installed and so am stuck.

Here is what I tried:

make config
make dep
make                <- and the compiler is erroring out.

The reason that I want to re-build the kernel is so that I can masquerade a PPTP client on my private network.
