You don't say whether the Linux Kernel found the SCSI devices or not.
Do a "dmesg|more" and see if the kernel found the SCSI card and the scanner.
If it didn't even look, do a lsmod to see if you have the scsi modules
installed (if you're using modules).
Below is what my kernel prints. There is a SCSI card, CD-RW, and DSS3 DAT
drive. This is 2.4.1, but the 2.2 series does this too.
