turns out that redhat's binaries made it simple once I found the
instructions (which was my motivation for passing on the web support manual
for Redhat 7 to everyone). The instructions from openssl.org and modssl.org
didn't completely track with redhat's binaries (not the first time that type
of thing happened - sigh)
