I didn't have any problems when i upgraded my 6.2 box to rpm4. Though i 
was running the newest version (the one that can use rpm4 rpms) of rpm3 
first.
Sorry i  can't help you out, but upgrading to the newest version of rpm3 
then going to rpm4 seems to be the solution.
