I would also recommend making sure you have the latest KDE updates as well.
I've had problems in the past with Kmail(still do), so I'm always on the
prowl for updates.

First thing I would do is to check your configuration settings, Clay.  
Under Settings->Configuration click on the Network button and make sure 
the specifications for sending and receiving mail are correct. 

Since you imply that the error occurs when you are checking mail, check 
the settings for incoming mail to be sure that KMail is trying to access 
the proper mail server.
