nmap on Redhat?

Carl, if you've got RH 7.2 it comes with nmap and nmapfe.  I don't
recall if it's included by default or if you have to choose it.  Most of
the time I spend on installing is browsing through the apps, mostly
unselecting.

If you want to see what ports are currently open you can use:

lsof -Pni
or
nmap localhost

to see the status of services you can use:
chkconfig --list | more

I don't know of any way to see past port activity, maybe browsing
through logfiles...
