XMMS couldn't open audio, but GTCD does

CD sound doesn't really require the soundcard to be configured since the CD-ROM
is doing the work of playing the music CD and just sending the output to a
direct hookup with the speakers.

I would check /etc/conf.modules or /etc/modules.conf and make sure that it has
the options for your soundcard.  If not (assuming Redhat) use sndconfig to set
it up as root.
