Scanners for Linux

Hey Everyone--

I was thinking of buying a scanner for use on my Debian Linux box in
the next week or two.  Does anyone on the list have any experience with
scanners that work well with SANE and Linux?

I was considering two options:

1) Buy a new scanner, in which case my selection is limited because a lot
   of new scanners are unsupported.  One that seems to be supported is the
   EPSON Perfection 1650, anyone have any experience with EPSON stuff?

2) Buy a used HP scanner from EBAY or a similar source.

I would love to hear any suggestions/recommendations or war stories related
to getting a scanner working under Linux.
