Under the assumption that in both configurations you're running the same
hardware/sofware/daemons/everything except for reiserfs, then I would
suggest running a memory checker.  I have worked with a box that was doing
something similar to what you described here with ext2 and reiser, and it
turned out to be bad ram.  I have also heard rumors of boxen that work
fine with reiser but puke with ext2 also due to bad ram.  You might try
going to freshmeat and searching for memtest, if nothing else, it's an
easy way to rule out the possibility.
