I had the same problem for a while on my machine when I was using KDE2.1,
never could figure out what was causing it, but top would pull up dozens of
'kdeinit' processes. I never did fix it, as I was only trying out kde2 to see
what it was like, and when I went into Gnome, the problem went away.
That may not be much help, but I guess it does say that it's not an isolated
incedent, and probably related to KDE2.1.
