Newbie Question

I have done this before and have tried and tried to fix and can't seem to get
it.

I have installed Postgres 6.5.2-2.

I have invoked

initdb --pgdata=/var/lib/pgsql --pglib=/usr/lib/pgsql

That worked fine.

When I try to start postmaster with

postmaster -D/var/lib/pgsql

I get a static screen, nothing, it looks like it's locked up, I have to
Control-C to stop it.

Can anyone help?  What am I missing?
