I'm feeling guilty that I mentioned it but since the issue was to keep using
the linux mail server (which by the way, the openmail might be the best
conclusion in that particular light) and I know I wasn't familiar with this
feature and I suspect that most other users aren't either.

this describes setup on Net Folders on the Outlook MUA.

and by the way, the answer is no - does not use shared IMAP folders.
