Shawn - thanks for the help

I ended up getting it to work with Netscape Mail (definitely not my favorite
but suitable for the purpose) and using the "insert image" menu item -
putting in the URL and checking the box 'leave image at original location'
which created ...
<img SRC="http://myserver.com/img" NOSAVE height=1 width=1> sending it as
both plain & html.

and it worked - thanks - pest control seemed suddenly necessary.
