printer blues

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem but I cannot print to
by hp deskjet 550c anymore.  I has not been working for a while and I don't
know when or what caused it to stop working.

When I plug my 550c into the parallel port the busy light stay on and
nothing prints.

Is there any parallel port configurations that need to be done?

I have upgraded the kernel from a redhat 5.1 several times (2.2.14 is where
i'm at).  Is there any special compile options to be aware of?  I did
include just about anything having todo with prallel port and printers...
