Dave Sill's "Living with Qmail" web page mentions this point,
which should help give you a warm feeling aboout security:

qmail was written by Dan Bernstein (DJB),
http://pobox.com/~djb/djb.html, a math professor now at the
University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Bernstein is also well known
for his work in the field of cryptography ...

Security is described as one of the main justifications for qmail.

I asked the opinion of one administrator, who handles very
large-volume mail systems. He says sendmail is the industrial grade
choice. Despite past problems, it's become quite mature, and
current versions can be made pretty secure if you work hard enough
at it; but he says qmail is still great for moderate sized sites.
