Did you install Xfree86 4 or 3.3.6 when it prompted you? If you're not =
failure with Xfree86 and/or have a semi-obscure video card, you will =
want to make sure that you go with 3.3.6. Version 4 is very new and =
lacks the wide range of video card support and pleasant setup/config =
utilities.

If that's not the case, it sounds like you're missing some libraries or =
the ld.so.conf isn't setup correctly, broken links, or something weird =
like that.

You might try flipping to an alternate screen (alt+function key) and =
logging in as root and doing a:

find / -name libx11.so.* -print

and report back your findings to us along with the contents of your =
/etc/ld.so.conf file (cat /etc/ld.so.conf). Be sure to include other =
information like your video card model, etc. It might also be worth =
checking for errors in your /var/log/messages file (type: less =
/var/log/messages as the root use.. shift+G will take you to the bottom =
of the file and q willl exit).

One other thing would be to run XF86Setup and make sure you have the =
right card chosen, etc.

Regards,
Mike Cantrell

I am seeking advice regarding installation guides or linux user =
guides. I have mandrake 7.1 and I'm totally new to unix/linux and =
needless to say cannot get the xwindows to work. Error message during =
boot states;
local host login:kdm: error in loading shared libraries:libx11.so.6 =
cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory
  Last line in process states:
Init: id "x" respawning to fast disabled for five minutes.
  Any help appreciated,
  John
