I'm not sure what you are looking for in a scanner.
I have a Mustek 600 II EP that works only with Windows.
Recently I bought an HP PhotoSmart S20 scanner that is a USB scanner. It
scans slides, negatives, and photos up to 5x7. It is truly wonderful!
On checking the SANE web page, this scanner is supported in the latest
2.3.xx builds of the kernel.
It should also work in the pre-release of 2.4.
I use both scanners on my wife's Win98 machine with wonderful results.
Just my 2¢ worth.
