Behind the 1024th cylinder

That depends.  The problem with the root partition (or whichever has the kernel)
lying beyond the 1024th cylinder was a bios issue, not a lilo or linux issue. 
If the system is fairly recent it shouldn't have a problem with it (IIRC).
