Getting ldp to run

Hi,

I am unable to use lpd to print a file on RH 6.1.  lpc tells me the daemon 
is not running.  I have used printtool and configured the printer to lp1 (I 
have two parallel ports but I have a dotmatrix printer on lp0 that I am not 
using) and WP8 works perfect with lp1.  Any ideas where to look?  I tried 
restarting lpd with printtool but lpc then says the daemon is not running.
