web based mail server

I am looking ahead knowing that I am going to need a http based server for
internet mail where the actual pop3/imap/actually Groupwise server will be
behind a firewall. I have been playing with several perl based setups none
entirely complete and the one I like best so far requires the mail server to
be on the localhost and not a remote host. Seems that more development is
centered on php based systems.

So my questions are:

anybody using a GPL style perl or PHP based http mail server with success?
Support SSL? How about commercial based software that works (though this is
poorly funded non-profit).
