For those interested:
Someone suggested null'ing the file instead
of deleteing it.......That is what I normally
do. Why, in this case I did a 'rm', I don't
know, but I remember kicking myself right then
and there for not nulling it.

Anyway, it helps when you fsck the right partition.
I had my /dev/sdaX number wrong. I kept fsck'ing the
/var partition instead of /home.

When I got it right, whew! The inode(?) numbers whizzed
accros the screen soooo fast I thought something was really hosed.
Eveentually (after about 5 minutes) it came to it's senses
and everything is OK.
