networking problems

Hello,
the lpd daemon does not initialize correctly and i
cannot ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1
Any time i try to ping another host it only sends the
first packet and after that nothing
I cannot ping \it from a different computer either
I am running red hat 7.0
eth0 initializes ok
i cannot ping my default gateway at all and it is
pingable from other computers.
i also get this error on boot up when lpd is trying to
start
'Get local host' Local host ip address unavailable!
Any suggestions?
