Since your goal is to learn I'd suggest installing both Mandrake and
FreeBSD. With a custom install Mandrake offers a good description of
each package as you select them, and you should plan to spend a couple
of hours just going over these and making notes.
Red Hat is fine too and very similar to Mandrake. Don't worry too much
about the partitioning, you'll redo it all soon enough anyway. :-)
