ok  - I appreciate these suggestions, and i will look into it as I
think I'm the only one with a forest nearby (must have real trees) ;)
unfortunately,  you are missing the point - the idea is to have a
little hardware project that can be put together at a couple meetings
of the PLUGdevel er meeting..

so simplicity, low to no cost, and hardware hacking are the objectives
- with that in mind, I've been collecting stuff about what folks are
making with a little thing called the Gumstix - an Arm based system.

As I go off to read the NYtimes article - keep up the suggestions -
and come by the next PLUGdev meeting - 1st Thr of the month at UAT!
