The presentation took the whole meeting, so we didn't get much chance to
discuss the project beyond recommending an announcement of some sort
this week..
As far as that goes:
PLUG has discussed, at the development meeting, initiating an open
source (GPL) project to create an event planning software system,
initial focus will be on supporting those features needed for monthly
installfests, followed by larger installfests, free/open meeting events,
conferences, symposia, and other event types as needed.
I have volunteered to act as an initial project lead and software
architect to get things up and running.
At this point, we need 3-5 other people willing to commit some amount of
time (2 hours per week, or more) over the next 6 months to get the
initial development done.
We also need the following:
People willing to try the software and provide feedback on features,
fit-and-finish, and any defect discovered
Someone willing to maintain (but not necessarily host) the project website
People willing to help us with feature requests
We have someone who has volunteered to setup our source repository in
subversion, but we will need someone willing and able to host the
development site.
I'd rather not host this on SourceForge until at least the first few
iterations are complete, to ensure we don't end up adding yet another
dead and unusable project to SourceForge.
There has not been a decision made regarding the development platform.
The current suggestions are GNUe (all development would be Python) or
J2EE (All core development would be Java, although modules could be
written in other languages if appropriate) The system is expected to
incorporate (eventually) a mix of server-side and client-side code,
possibly including a stand-alone client capable of offline use for some
functions, a rich online interface, PDA support, and whatever other
platform support the user community needs.
The proposed development methodology is Lightweight/Open which adapts
many of the features of XP to open source development.
The project will use the PLUG Devel mailing list as the project mailing
list.
I expect we will hold a project naming discussion(contest?) on-list
sometime in April.
Reply on-list if you are interested and/or willing to volunteer.
