the topic this time around is PHP for non-web scripts.

For your standard scripts PHP is just as capable as Perl. Perl does have a
much larger repository of libraries (CPAN), but PHP is still quite easy to
work with.

PHP does have one feature not available in Perl that just rocks, though.
That's the inline scripting capabilities. In other words, it's possible to
embed PHP into a normal text file. For "everything is a file" *NIX this is
an outstanding capability that makes PHP stand apart from the pack.
