thank you so much for the brain-trust of the PLUG group. I've figured out what  is wrong with the USB drive that is giving me trouble. the problem is totally hardware related. If I pull it out a little the drive will connect for a little while. And I have discovered that I lost my pictures forever:( And you've been as focused on the issue as well as i could possibly ask you to be. Thanks again guys!
