What you’re trying to do is disable any action by the desktop environment when you close the laptop lid. It’s usually under the power settings, wherever your desktop environment keeps those. You should be able to do this as your normal user so there’s no need to use sudo/root.

On my Linux 19 Cinnamon thinkpad, when I lift the lid, it always
requires a password. How can I eliminate that?

I have tried two proposed solutions that I found from searching,
but the unwanted password prompt is still there.

(1) Open terminal and type "sudo passwd root". It prompts for
a password for the root account. I enter the admin password
then to "Preferences" and "Login Windows" then followed the
prompts but could not find a way to eliminate the password.

Next, I went here:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=71680

And found this: enable auto login so that you don't need a password
to log in. Go to the Administration menu/Login screen and set up
an auto login for a user. But again, following all the prompts
did not give me the desired solution:

System Settings > Administration > Login Window > Users > Automatic
login >
Username [joe]

What am I doing wrong?  How can I eliminate this annoying requirement
to enter a password again every time I shut the lid and open it again?
