Well the Chromecast functionality I think, with R-Pi powered speakers and wifi might be a solid bet, but wire would work as well. 

Have to give this some thought.

There's a Free Software project for building a home assistant. I'd rather
avoid that right now and prefer a setup without microphones and camaeras.

Wired or wireless can work.
