1. remove your printer

2. run this command in terminal as sudo 'hp-setup -i ip address of printer'

   -go through the set up wizard in the terminal and print you test page

3. open simple scan and you should then see your printer. also goto preferences in simple scan and set the resolution

Try running your scanner software with sudo from the command line and see if that makes it work.  If it does, then it's a permissions issue.  You  probably just need to add yourself to the scanner group and then logout and back in and it will work.
