If you use Gnome, just select some files or folders, and right-click, choose "compress". Choose your format, 7z, zip, etc etc. You didn't specify your desktop environment so I hope this is helpful.

After a little looking into this myself I found a discussion which says merely use 'zip -k'. Is there a better way to do this?--
