I'll run fsck but a weird thing is that directories  and files have are locked but I can still access them. Then when I back out of the directory the lock is gone  and then back in and the pictures are no longer locked.

 If this disk worked before, it almost certainly has filesystem problems.  Check the output of "dmesg | grep err" and you'll probably see a series of errors related to the disk that's mounted on /media/bmike1 .  If you umount the disk and fsck it, the problem may stop happening.
