On a similar note, if you are looking to add the same text or a watermark to a bunch of images, take a look at imagemagick or it's fork graphicsmagick (both command line only).  They will allow you to do hundreds of images all at once and in an automated way.

Pull it up in something like GIMP and add a text layer, it defaults to a transparent background so that should do what you want.

You can also have an image/logo that you have created with a transparent background and add that on top of your image, scale it as you want with the transform tool and away you go.
