If you watch sales you can get 1T drives for 50-60 for quality vendors.

Not enough space.  If you spend a little more, you can get something with enough capacity to actually be usable.  A 500G USB3 disk was on the shelves at Fried Hardware for $60 or so last year, and it's worked just fine for me.  pricewatch.com lists some 160G USB disks for $40, which is probably a better deal if money is really tight.
