I've never tried to install KDE onto Ubuntu, I just use the Kubuntu distribution. Unity was usable at first, as you could still reasonably customize it, but then they disabled a lot of options when they realized folks who did work didn't like the unity layout, and that's when I switched to Kubuntu and never looked back. Though I may check out Mint, several friends really seem to like it.

Mint is nice, but when I put it on this machine about one in three times it would not recognize the USB keyboard and mouse. Damned difficult to log in under those circumstances. After this happened three times on one boot I decided there was a problem. Mine or theirs, i don't know, and don't care.

What problems will I encounter installing KDE onto an existing Ubuntu load?

The reason is an echo Pa Kettle's noting of problems with Ubuntu.

In my case, it is manifests every time I boot Ubuntu and it tells me it had a problem that must be reported. he problem, according the message, which I am paraphrasing as Unity-settings-utility has had a problem. When I did a web search I find that problems with this interface have existed for four or five years. Seems that they either aren't interested, or aren't capable of fixing it. Perhaps the utility needs to be replaced with something else that will work.

Ubuntu has also mandated that I install an extra external fan as its demands on the system as it seems that it heats the whole system up to the point where it locks and becomes totally unresponsive.

Not ready for Prime Time, in spite of the prostelyzations of the AZ Loco group.

Not sure I can help. I personally prefer Kubuntu  as I like the present KDE desktop, and I like how fairly easy it is to configure the desktop the way I want it to be.

I have been using Linux for about 10 years now. Mostly Mint (latest 17.3), but I have tried almost every distro. I keep trying Ubuntu (latest 16.04).

I like Ubuntu although I’m still trying to get used to Unity. My problem with Ubuntu is the frozen gray screen. It doesn’t matter what program or website I’m on, I get the gray frozen screen, not always, but often. After a few seconds or sometimes minutes a message pops up and states “Ubuntu has a problem and needs to shut this program down. This had happened on 3 different desktop computers, so I know it’s not the CPU. Mint works and worked fine on all three. I guess just for general principle I would like to get a version of Ubuntu to work properly.

I check daily for any updates and do them immediately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
