Found out how to do it! Add 'ppa:mc3man/trusty-media' then install 'vlc vlc-plugin-*'.

No sound for mkv files. Video is fine.

Before you shoot of trying to compile a cousin version, can you define what you mean by VLC isn't working correctly?

Well, vlc is not running correctly. I made sure I have the proper ppa installed but have since been informed by a developer that vlc2.2 is needed. I guess I need to compile it. So the source is downloaded and configure is run and it says the program 'lua' is needed. So 'apt-get install lua' is run and it says that I have to specify which one I want to install. There is a choice between:

  lua5.1:i386 5.1.5-5ubuntu0.1
  lua5.1 5.1.5-5ubuntu0.1
  lua5.2:i386 5.2.3-1
  lua50 5.0.3-7
  lua5.2 5.2.3-1

So I need to ask if it matters which one is specified.
