I would dig into VLC and find out if anything depends on a certain version of LUA.  Like how something depend on an older (2.7) Python and others are fine with newer (3.x) versions.  That should answer your version question.  Regarding the build, unless you're working on an old machine, you probably want a 64-bit build (x86_64), if they offer it.

Well, vlc is not running correctly. I made sure I have the proper ppa installed but have since been informed by a developer that vlc2.2 is needed. I guess I need to compile it. So the source is downloaded and configure is run and it says the program 'lua' is needed. So 'apt-get install lua' is run and it says that I have to specify which one I want to install. There is a choice between:

  lua5.1:i386 5.1.5-5ubuntu0.1
  lua5.1 5.1.5-5ubuntu0.1
  lua5.2:i386 5.2.3-1
  lua50 5.0.3-7
  lua5.2 5.2.3-1

So I need to ask if it matters which one is specified.
