you know..... I thought that may have been the problem but the partition was listed as 'sde1. I thought that if it was formatted Microsoft the device would have been 'sde'. but it was not. thanks for the help!

Are you sure the USB drive is one of {ext2, ext3, ext4}? If so, I've never had a problem with `e2label` in those cases. But if the drive format is FAT*, try `mlabel` or `dosfslabel`.
