Is it the root loginĀ  ?

Ssh usually has root login disabled

Look for PermitRootLogin in /etc/ssh/sshd_config if that is the case

Actually, ftp works fine, but it is ssh that is not accepting
the same password on the same server. Strange.

Thanks for the advice. I've always used ftp to login to
my webhost. but I'll start using sftp now.
