Well, I configured an old router I had (before they started making modem/routers) to be a switch and then ran a 40 foot cable from my modem (feeding xbmc box) to my office where i put the switch. I think that router just died.

Figure out what your problem is first, by thinking, looking (did I plug the right shit into the right places?

I replaced the cable.

I don't think so. I didn't try to plug the cable in upside down or sideways :)
