well this is interesting.... I reboot the machine and at the login screen went to tty1 to check if it got an ip address. Well, it wouldn't type. Then a message appeared saying:

  BUG: soft lockup- CPU#0 stuck for 24s! [Xorg: 1465]

and every now and then it would say that again. sometimes it would say:
 
     BUG: soft lockup- CPU#0 stuck for 24s! [Kworker/0:2.68]

actually I think the decimal is just a character that isn't showing up fully because at another line that appeared the decimalwas like a dot towards the top of the line and there were lots of characters that weren't all there.
