thanks Hans.  that explains it. at first I thought nothing of the sort was done but then I looked at the computer and noticed the person sleeping in the computer room had plugged he iPhone into it. Thanks for the help guys! (and gals)

Sounds like an automount failed. Did you plug anything into a USB
port? Even just plugging in to charge could trigger an automount attempt.

As I was typing out this message it occurred to me to do a web search. It
seems as though it has something to do with an iPhone/iOS5. I have neither.
