I'll second (or forth) for mint debian edition.

I've had some quirks, usual crap with i386 vs amd64 architecture, libssl0.98, but most have been pretty easy to figure out with a google search.  Far less frustrating than with ubuntu, but a bit of a new learning curve none the less with debian.

One thing I haven't figured out on mint is why X will consume 32gb of my 32gb of ram until it swaps to death on my desktop.  I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fglrx blob for amd/ati cards, but rather annoying at the moment as it timebombs in under a week.  Ubuntu would die in 2 days with compiz enabled, or less, so I'm less annoyed with Mint or Debian, more with AMD.

Getting support out of AMD for linux seems to require an act of some deity to fix their shite drivers.  :\

I followed the directions in the link for shutting Tracker off.
System is now running better.

Still no e-mail send, work on that tomorrow.

Will look at Mint for virtual desktops

Thanks

I'll second ubuntu for desktops. I usually use a server install disk unless I am doing something built on a main iso like kbuntu ect.

I myself rather like kubuntu for my laptops/desktop  but that is just my preference.  I love CentOS for servers (well, not sure about 7 yet)....but for desktops...nope.

If you consider ubuntu run mint instead. Then there is Linux Mint Debian  Edition.

Not sure if this will help, as I know nothing about Tracker-miner nor CentOS....

Have you tried Debian or Ubuntu?

Saturday, at the Installfest, despite cautions from Thomas, I installed CentOS on my new computer.

The install went well from the standpoint of reallocating the partitions and getting Grub to recognize both CentOS and Win 7.

When I started working with it I loaded on my files.
Files that took forty minutes to backup took two hours to load on a faster system.
The culprit  seems to be Tracker-miner.

It continues to drag the system down when I am trying to do other things.

I have no idea why I need an application on here to, supposedly help me find files.
In all of the years I have worked with Linux I can think of only three instances where I have used find to locate a file, and it worked nicely, thank you.

Now I have a system that uses all of its resources to track files I will likely never ask for. Grrrrrrrr.

After that the change of Gnome and KDE to eliminate my virtual desktops is unimportant.

Would anyone like to suggest a better distro that will actually run and perhaps has more than four desktops, while running Office Libre, and plays You Tube videos in a browser?
