This is tricky because the shutdown pulls down all the resources you'd use to save your log.  If the redirect does what you want, then cool.  In the past I've had to hook up serial consoles to capture everything without disk or network being up.

I also forgot the 2>&1
 So you would go into a tty and type:

sudo shutdown > filename 2>&1
