I download most distros for the installfest and install many in a vm just to test and get a feel of how it  works. I do think all current distros are have a reason to exist or their would be no development or users. Distrowatch has a list of discontinued distros. I spend some time on criagslist linux forum and there are a lot of open suse user that are hard core server desktop users.
