Thanks for your help. I will go with the Dell system probably the T110 system. The thing is I am more of a consultant more then I am a full time employee so if anything goes wrong it will be nice for me or them to call dell if a hard drive fails or memory goes bad. I doubt that I will need their services and I might even be fine with building my own (the current server I built was running 24/7 for about 5 years) but I want that peace of mind. I did spec out the dell T110 and building my own and the dell system is about 600 bucks more but comes with support. Not only this but I do not have to waste a day getting everything assembled and working on the software.

This is a somewhat risky combination to put on the same server. The reason being you now have your entire company exposed to the outside world. An option would be to use a VM solution on the bare metal and then you could separate your Services and even use different OS's for each based on needs. as for the server i would probably look at the Dell T110 and T320 as they are both for sale at 600 and under to start and can scale very nicely for a smaller business. and you can leverage Dell support and get replacement parts and materials quite fast.

The server will start out as a domain controller/file server but I might expand to possibly a web server as well.

What’s the server for?

Just an in-house file server?

Or does it need to be a web server with external / public access?

I was wondering if I should build my own or go with and OEM such as dell. I would consider HP but I do like Dell's direct to purchase/customization but I am free for suggestions. I was thinking an Xeon E3 quad core, about 8gb of ram, 4 500gb hard drives and that should be about it. I am thinking about building my own because a lot of the server boards come with IPMI support and the Dell model I was looking at was the T1102 which does not inlcude IPMI what so ever. Thanks for taking the time.

A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.
