Mike, on the virtual as root:
passwd (I mostly use vv)
apt-get install ssh
when done, from the host:
ssh root@${VIRTUAL}
Now you work from 'your box' over an SSH shell.
YMMV...

PS: This will only work if the interface is 'bridged', the virtual 'NAT(s)' by default.
