delboy@ladmo:~/.local/share/applications$ ls -l mimeapps.list
-rw-rw-r-- 1 delboy delboy 15740 Jan 15 02:06 mimeapps.list

I went into system settings - file associations and added amarok to the list of files to play mp3 files and moved it to the bottom of the list.  Next I checked mimeapps.list and found the following two lines.

From mimeapps.list
audio/x-mp3=kde4-amarok.desktop
audio/x-mpeg=kde4-amarok.desktop

Then I went back to file associations and removed amarok from the list of files to play mp3 files.  I clicked on an mp3 file and vlc played it.  I went back to look at mimeapps.list and these two lines were still there.

From mimeapps.list
audio/x-mp3=kde4-amarok.desktop
audio/x-mpeg=kde4-amarok.desktop

Weird.  We'll the file that dictates the order of the applications that open files is:
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

I'd love to hear a follow up if you can figure out what happened (permissions?)

I've never seen that before.  My best guess would be that you forgot
to click "Apply" after you changed the priority.

Recently I installed Amarok on my system running kubuntu 13.10.  It set
itself up as the default player for mp3, flac and m3u playlists.  I
didn't want that so I went into settings, file associations and sure
enough the defalt was amarok.  I reset these to vlc.  When I tried to
play one, amarok opened to play it.  I went back to settings, file
associations and amarok was set as the default for these file types.  I
tried resetting them several times, but amarok was always the default
player.  I finally fixed it by going back in, selecting amarok and
removing it instead of moving it down the list.  Has anyone else
experienced this?

Thanks
Derek
